Northern Ireland contractor McLaughlin & Harvey has been awarded a £30m contract to construct a new Eastern Inner Dock Quay at Maraen Port of Nigg on Scotland's Cromarty Firth, as the port gears up to support construction and logistics operations for offshore wind and wider energy sector projects. The contract marks a return to the site for McLaughlin & Harvey, which has previously delivered marine infrastructure works at Nigg.

The Belfast News Letter reported that the project will transform the existing rock revetment of the inner dock's eastern side into a 16,000 square metre, deep-water quayside with roll-on, roll-off capability, significantly enhancing port capacity for inbound and outbound logistics across offshore wind, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors.

Maraen Port of Nigg, which holds Green Freeport status and has supported the deployment of over 4GW of offshore wind capacity to date, is owned by Mitsui & Co. Europe Ltd and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd following their 2025 acquisition of the Port of Nigg, Global Energy (Group) and Global Energy Services businesses, which were rebranded under the Maraen name.

Seamus Devlin, managing director at McLaughlin & Harvey, said: "We're pleased to be returning to the Port of Nigg, enhancing port capacity and operational capability by creating a new quay for the energy sector. This project draws on our experience of delivering complex marine projects in port infrastructure across the UK and Ireland."

Rory Gunn, facilities director at Maraen Port of Nigg, said: "This project is exactly the kind of targeted infrastructure that the energy industry needs from us and we are looking forward to delivering another successful capital investment project at our site."
