Keller acquires Wisconsin construction firm to expand design-build portfolio

Wisconsin-based Keller Inc. has acquired Appleton construction company Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, bringing together two Fox Cities contractors under employee ownership while maintaining separate operational identities and expanding combined market reach across education, senior living and commercial sectors.

Post Crescent reported that the transaction, completed on 2 February, was not disclosed financially but creates a combined workforce of approximately 335 employees. Hoffman, founded in 1892, will operate as A Keller Company whilst retaining its brand, leadership team and downtown Appleton offices with 50 staff members.

Cory Vande Wettering, chief executive of Keller, said the acquisition strengthens the company's design-build general contracting portfolio whilst providing Hoffman access to expanded resources for its work in key markets. He emphasised that both companies will maintain distinct operational focuses, with Hoffman continuing to serve education, senior living and religious building clients where it has established expertise.

Hoffman has worked with more than 80 school districts and private schools on building projects and renovations, including facility upgrades for Shawano School District completed in January 2026. The firm's project history dates to 1892 when its first commission was Columbus Elementary School in Appleton.

Chad Ulman, Hoffman's chief operating officer and executive vice president, will assume leadership of the business. Former owner and president Sam Statz transitions to a business development role. Ulman said finding a company aligned with Hoffman's principles was essential to strengthening the firm's legacy and positioning the team for future growth.

Keller, founded in 1960 and employee-owned since 1986, operates through 285 employee-owners. Hoffman's 50 employees became eligible for Keller's employee stock ownership plan effective from the acquisition date.
