JJ Rhatigan secures contract for Cork garda headquarters construction

Construction firm JJ Rhatigan & Company has been appointed to build a new garda headquarters in Macroom, County Cork, following contract signing that clears the project for site mobilisation and marks a significant delivery milestone in Ireland's public sector construction pipeline.

The Irish Independent reported that the 4,338 sq. m facility will serve as the operational headquarters for An Garda Síochána in County Cork, incorporating public offices, staff facilities, conference areas, custody zones and plant infrastructure. The project site is located at Millstreet Cross beside the town's recently completed fire station.

Deputy Aindrias Moynihan, fianna fáil TD for Cork North West, said the contract signing brings the new station closer to reality after extensive preparatory work involving the Office of Public Works, Cork County Council, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice. He confirmed that JJ Rhatigan will mobilise crews in the coming weeks.

The facility represents a consolidation of garda operational capacity in the region and will bring additional personnel and services to Macroom. Deputy Moynihan acknowledged the patience of local gardaí and residents throughout the development process, noting that the headquarters will strengthen policing presence across the area.

The project adds to Ireland's ongoing public sector construction activity, which includes justice, healthcare and civic infrastructure schemes progressing through procurement and delivery phases nationwide. JJ Rhatigan's appointment follows competitive tendering procedures managed through the OPW's capital works framework.

The multi-million euro development forms part of broader government investment in modernising garda estate and operational infrastructure, with several similar projects at various stages across the country addressing capacity and facility standards in the justice sector.
