University College Dublin-based startup SlateRete has developed a concrete alternative using slate waste that reduces carbon emissions by more than 40% compared to conventional cement production, addressing environmental concerns whilst targeting commercial construction applications through ongoing technical validation and certification processes.

Yahoo Finance reported that brothers Hamed and Sadegh Panahiazar launched SlateRete in 2024 with the objective of changing the construction industry by providing a reliable, high-performance substitute for concrete with significantly reduced harmful emissions and waste. The company was featured as Startup of the Week by Silicon Republic on 17 February.

The product addresses substantial waste generated during slate extraction, with studies indicating as much as 90% of raw slate ends up in landfills. SlateRete intervenes to create a circular system in which slate retains value by replacing high-carbon ingredients in cement with processed slate waste material.

Hamed Panahiazar said he and his brother believe the product will provide an alternative that meets regulatory demands and market needs without compromising performance or cost. The patent-pending mixture requires no hazardous chemicals to achieve aesthetically pleasing colours, with blue, green, grey, ochre, purple and black arising naturally from slate's mineral composition.

SlateRete has completed 20 mix trials to date. The company is now focusing on lifecycle analysis and certification testing whilst continuing to engage with investors and prepare the product for market entry across construction applications.

Panahiazar told Silicon Republic that following successful technical validation at UCD, efforts are concentrated on preparing investment materials, refining pitch presentations and evaluating strategic partnerships. He noted that response from industry stakeholders has been encouraging, reaffirming market appetite for low-carbon and aesthetically superior alternatives to concrete.
