Mexican building materials group Cemex and Port Tampa Bay have completed a $36m (€33m) expansion of a marine aggregate terminal in Florida, boosting the supply of raw construction materials into one of the US's fastest-growing construction markets. The project includes a $29m (€26.6m) investment from Cemex and a $7m (€6.4m) grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Tampa Bay Business and Wealth reported that the expansion was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Cemex executives, Port Tampa Bay officials and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor. The facility will import crushed stone aggregate from Newfoundland, Canada, through Port Tampa Bay's deepwater berths via a conveying system capable of moving 5,000 tons per hour from ship to storage, with an expected annual throughput of approximately 1.5 million tons.

The expanded terminal combines an aggregate terminal, cement terminal and ready-mix concrete plant in a single integrated location, making it the only operation of its kind in Cemex's Florida network. The development comes as builders across the state face increasing pressure to secure reliable aggregate supply amid a sustained pipeline of apartment, industrial, transportation and public works schemes across the Tampa Bay region.

Jesus Gonzalez, president of Cemex US, said: "The completion of our Aggregate Terminal at Port Tampa Bay strengthens Cemex's ability to serve one of Florida's fastest-growing regions with the essential materials needed to build and maintain critical infrastructure."

Paul Anderson, president and CEO of Port Tampa Bay, said: "Port Tampa Bay is proud to support Cemex's growing operations and the broader Tampa Bay economy."
