Industry NewsCCCC deploys electric heavy-duty trucks at Ethiopia's Bishoftu International Airport construction site
Chinese state-owned contractor China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has introduced 50 electric heavy-duty trucks to the construction site of the Bishoftu International Airport in Ethiopia, with a further 42 vehicles expected to arrive in the coming weeks. The deployment represents one of the largest applications of new energy construction equipment on an African infrastructure project to date.
Xinhua News reported that the first batch of electric trucks, imported from China, commenced operations at the Bishoftu site on 29 April 2026, located approximately 40km southeast of Addis Ababa in the Oromia regional state.
Wei Qiangyu, general manager of the CCCC Ethiopia Branch, said: "The large-scale application of new energy equipment not only reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions, but also enhances construction efficiency and project reliability. It represents a meaningful step toward sustainable infrastructure development in Africa."
Liu Xiaoguang, minister counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, said the introduction of electric trucks is part of a joint commitment between China and Ethiopia to advancing green mobility, describing the move as a concrete measure to implement outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and support Ethiopia's climate-resilient green development strategy.
The Ethiopian government has been actively promoting electric mobility to reduce fuel import costs, ease pressure on foreign currency reserves, and advance environmental protection goals. The reduced noise levels of the electric fleet were also cited as a benefit for the construction environment.
When its first phase is completed in four years, Bishoftu International Airport will have the capacity to accommodate 60 million passengers annually, rising to 110 million passengers when fully completed, positioning the project as a major piece of African aviation infrastructure.
