Austrian construction and technology group STRABAG SE has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in BAWI Construction SRL, a Bucharest-headquartered railway infrastructure contractor, in a move that extends the group's footprint across Southeast Europe's growing rail market. As reported by STRABAG's corporate newsroom, the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals with closing expected in the second half of 2026.

BAWI Construction is an established railway infrastructure provider with comprehensive expertise spanning construction, modernisation, specialised works and its own component production. The company employs approximately 240 people and generated output of approximately €60 million in 2025, supported by a skilled workforce and a specialised fleet of machinery that enables a high degree of in-house production capability.

For STRABAG, the acquisition expands both its value chain depth and its machinery capacity in railway infrastructure, two areas of strategic importance as European rail investment accelerates. Romania's railway infrastructure market is drawing significant capital, with funding programmes connected to European infrastructure initiatives underpinning a sustained pipeline of projects across the country.

Péter Glöckler, member of the management board of STRABAG SE responsible for the South and East segment, said: "We see considerable future potential in the Romanian market and therefore aim to further expand our presence there. With BAWI, we are gaining an excellently positioned company with high technical expertise and a strong market presence. The acquisition allows us to strategically broaden our railway construction activities while reinforcing our value chain in a key future market."

The deal builds on STRABAG's recent momentum in European rail. In June 2026, the group signed a €255 million contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe to deliver a strategic upgrade of railway Line 201 in Poland, bringing its total renewal commitment for PKP PLK to 104 kilometres of railway infrastructure. Its Australian subsidiary Georgiou also secured rail contracts worth more than €490 million for Stage 1 of The Wave infrastructure project in Queensland.

STRABAG SE employs approximately 89,000 people and generates an annual output volume of around €20 billion, operating across all areas of the construction industry from planning and design through to construction, operation and facility management.
