SSE Thermal has commenced construction on Platin Power Station, a €300 million open cycle gas turbine facility in County Meath designed to deliver 170MW of flexible generation capacity to Ireland's electricity grid, as reported by LMFM. Atlantic Projects Company (APC), a subsidiary of US-listed Argan Inc., has been appointed as EPC contractor, with three Siemens Energy SGT-800 turbines specified for the project operating in open cycle mode with supporting balance of plant equipment.

The station is located to the west of the M1 motorway in the townland of Platin, Caulstown, Carranstown and Duleek in County Meath. Planning consent was granted in early 2025, with SSE plc taking its final investment decision in July 2025. Construction commenced this autumn with planned completion in 2028.

The project is underpinned by a ten-year Capacity Market agreement with a total value of approximately €250 million, providing revenue certainty over the station's initial operational period. The agreement secures Platin's role in supporting grid stability and security of supply in the Leinster region across the next decade.

Platin Power Station is designed to operate on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a biofuel produced from waste oils and aligned with EU sustainability standards, as well as natural gas. The facility is also hydrogen-ready, with a pathway to convert to low-carbon hydrogen in the future, connecting it to SSE Thermal's broader decarbonisation programme through its existing Mission H2 Power partnership with Siemens Energy.

Finlay McCutcheon, managing director of SSE Thermal, said: "We're proud to once again partner with Atlantic Projects Company, and Siemens Energy, to deliver Platin Power Station. Our focus is now on working together to complete the project safely and efficiently. By providing flexible power generation, Platin will help strengthen Ireland's security of supply while supporting the country's net zero ambitions."

Charles E. Collins IV, executive managing director of APC, said the Platin contract represented APC's second project with SSE in 2025 and that the company looked forward to building on the partnership to deliver a project supporting the transition to cleaner, more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.
