Ireland has finished construction of a €80m government-owned data centre at the Backweston Campus in Kildare, designed to consolidate multiple legacy facilities and provide critical infrastructure for State agencies including Revenue, An Garda Síochána, and Social Protection.

Built with sustainability at its core, the 8,300 sqm facility will be linked to a future solar farm, utilise free cooling, and potentially repurpose waste heat for campus buildings. Operations will begin in 2026 under the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine.

Part-funded by €40m from the EU’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan, the project showcases how government is addressing energy use, digital resilience, and security amid Ireland’s wider moratorium on new commercial data centres in Dublin.
