Data centre operator Equinix has commenced construction of a new facility in Blanchardstown, Dublin, requiring no additional grid power connectivity as it will be built on an existing Equinix site using power already allocated to that facility, with the company anticipating €68m investment in the new data centre plus an additional €12m to support buildout.

RTÉ reported that the new building, DB7x, will be located close to two of Equinix's existing data centres. Peter Lantry, managing director of Equinix Ireland, said the announcement strongly supports the government's recently published Digital and AI Strategy, which outlines a path for keeping Ireland at the forefront of global digital innovation, describing it as positive news for the Irish economy.

Lantry added that by expanding colocation capacity in Dublin, the company will enable domestic and international enterprises to scale, innovate and connect across Equinix's global digital infrastructure platform with ease. The project advances following lifting of an effective moratorium on new data centre connections.

Anne-Marie Tierney Le Roux, head of technology at IDA Ireland, said the announcement represents a significant boost to Ireland's digital infrastructure. She noted that Equinix's continued investment demonstrates strong confidence in Ireland as a location for high-performance, sustainable data centre operations.

Data centres accounted for 22% of electricity usage in Ireland in 2024, up from just 5% in 2015. Consumption levels are estimated to grow to almost a third of national electricity demand by 2030, prompting regulatory framework changes.

In January, the government published a Large Energy Action Plan aimed at enabling further development of energy-intensive facilities including data centres.
