Construction risks missing future talent without stronger careers guidance

As GCSE results are released, the Chartered Institute of Building warns that the UK’s housing and climate ambitions could falter without greater efforts to attract young talent into construction.

While two-thirds of young people view the sector positively, nearly half report never receiving careers advice about it—limiting entry into vital roles such as architects, surveyors, tradespeople and site managers. Parents are largely supportive, with many favouring apprenticeships over university due to debt and job market concerns.

With demand for skilled workers rising, construction’s ability to deliver on net zero and housing targets hinges on positioning itself as a future-proof, rewarding career path.
