Construction planning slows but data centres keep momentum

Nonresidential construction planning lost steam in February, with institutional projects like hospitals and schools dropping 4.6%. However, commercial planning—driven by the booming data centre sector—offset the decline with a 3.3% rise, keeping overall growth in positive territory.

Without data centres, planning activity would have fallen 2%, highlighting the sector’s outsized role in driving development. Despite the slowdown, nonresidential planning remains up 27% year-over-year, though growth outside data centres is far more modest.
